Ralph Vaughan Williams
Compositeur anglais formé auprès de Parry et Stanford au Royal College of Music, puis de Max Bruch à Berlin et de Maurice Ravel à Paris en 1908. Collecteur de chansons populaires anglaises et éditeur musical de The English Hymnal (1906), il fonda son langage sur ce répertoire et sur la polyphonie Tudor — d'où la Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (1910). The Lark Ascending, d'après Meredith, fut créé dans sa version avec orchestre en 1921 ; il laisse neuf symphonies, dont la Deuxième, dite A London Symphony.
